I can’t see anyone nearby
Check that Bluetooth is on and that Nicechat is allowed to find nearby devices. The other person needs Nicechat or bitchat open, or running in the background. Walls and crowds shorten the range, so try moving closer. On iPhone, keep the app open for the best results.
What do the message statuses mean?
“Sending”, “Sent”, “Delivered” and “Read” mean what they say. “Will deliver when nearby” means the other person is out of reach: the message is waiting and goes out when they’re back. If it can’t be delivered within 24 hours, it’s marked as failed and you can try again.
Why won’t my photo or voice message send?
Photos and voice messages travel over Bluetooth only, so the other person needs to be nearby. They show as waiting and send automatically when you’re close again.
Places says I’m offline
Places and place notes need an internet connection. If Privacy mode is on and a private connection can’t be made, online features pause instead of connecting directly.
I got a new phone. Where are my chats?
Nicechat doesn’t back up or transfer your identity or chats. A new phone starts with a new identity — add your friends again with your QR code.
Notifications don’t show message text
By default, message text is hidden on the lock screen, and Privacy mode hides it everywhere. You can change this in Notification settings in the Me tab.
Report abuse or block someone
-
Block
Open the person’s profile, or long-press one of their messages, and choose Block. Blocked people can’t message you, and you won’t see them nearby. They aren’t told.
-
Report
Long-press a message, or open a profile, and choose Report. Pick a reason and tap Send report. Your email app opens with a report to us that includes the person’s public key and their recent messages — check it, then send it.
-
Reports in Places
In a place chat, a report is also published publicly, so other people and apps in that place can see it.
-
Email
You can also write to [email protected] with the nickname, the time and place, and a screenshot if you have one.
Because Nicechat has no central server, we can’t read your chats or delete messages from other people’s phones or public relays. Blocking takes effect immediately on your phone. If anyone is in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services.
Erase your data
- Open the Me tab and tap Erase everything, then confirm. This permanently deletes your identity keys, friends, chats, waiting messages, media and settings from this phone, and gives you a fresh identity.
- With Privacy mode on, you can also triple-tap the Me tab to erase everything at once.
- Tip: erase everything before you uninstall. Some phones can keep app keys after the app is removed.
We don’t hold any of your data, so there’s nothing to delete on our side. Messages you already sent may remain on other people’s phones and — for public posts such as Places and place notes — on public relays. We can’t delete those copies.
SOS disclaimer
SOS in Nicechat sends your call for help, peer to peer, to people nearby and to your friends. It does not contact the police, ambulance, fire services or any other emergency service.
Delivery isn’t guaranteed. It depends on Bluetooth, nearby phones, battery and, for friends far away, an internet connection. People who receive an SOS are not obliged to respond.
Never rely on SOS as your only way to get help. If you can, call your local emergency number.
